Our history

  • 1901

    The Tipton & Coseley Building Society was founded. Tipton & District Permanent Building Society was founded on 1 May 1901, becoming one of the 2,000 building societies in the UK. By 1 July 1901 the first subscription meeting had been arranged at 30 Owen Street, Tipton. Each subscription was set at 2/6d or 1/3d each week. Fines were levied for any late payments and investors even had to pay for their own passbook. By September the Society had 53 members.

  • 1934

    New Coseley office opened. By 1934 the Society's assets had grown to £257,239:0:7, an increase of £41,670 in the year. The Society opened an office in Coseley and built a new strong room at our Head Office in Tipton. The Board was made up of 12 Directors.

  • 1939

    Name change. Due to the success of the Coseley office, the Society renamed as Tipton & Coseley Permanent Building Society. The word 'Permanent' was later dropped in 1972. The number of permanent building societies had reduced to 1,007 but combined assets had increased to £555million, up from £59million at the turn of the century.

  • 1958

    Assets stood at £1.2million, and a new Secretary was appointed. The Society underwent extensive modernisation and by the mid 70's assets increased to £10million.

  • 1979

    By 1979 only 287 Societies remain with combined assets now exceeding £45billion. The Society continued to prosper with the Sedgley office becoming a huge success and by the early 80's the Society opened Dudley and Bilston branches, keeping our roots firmly in the Black Country. 

  • 1994

    The Society's assets broke through £100milion for the first time and moved to a newly developed purpose built Head Office. Branches also underwent a refurbishment with state of the art computer systems installed to allow the development of mortgage and savings ranges. 

  • 2001

    The dawn of the new millennium saw the Society's first website go live, allowing an extension of the Society's service to a new customer base. Assets were also fast approaching £200million. 

  • 2004

    The Society were delighted to be crowned winners of the aware for best customer service in the Black Country. After another exceptional year, assets exceeded £1/4billion. 

  • 2011

    The Society's Sedgley branch was relocated from Dudley Street to 6 Bull Ring, a prime location in the centre of town where the Society introduced two separate interview rooms for mortgage and financial service appointments and doubled the number of till positions for savers.

  • 2017

    The Society was crowned Professional Services Firm of the Year' at the annual Wolverhampton Law Society awards, in recognition of the great service provided to customers.

  • 2020

    The Society introduced a ground breaking mobile app, being the first building society to offer new and existing customers the ability to open, view and manage savings accounts on the go. Assets increased to over £400million for the first time in the Society's history.
